Abstract

1,150,352. Electro-physical measurement. MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG. Ltd. April 27, 1966 [April 28, 1965], No.17867/65. Heading G1N. [ Also in Division G3] The height of a stack of paper in a sheet feeding machine is estimated by its dielectric effect in a capacitor formed by a machine part and a plate mounted on the back board. As described the layboy platform is lowered intermittently in steps every time the sensed capacitance exceeds a preselected value to maintain the top of the stack at a substantially constant level relative to the sheet feed. Sheets are delivered by conveyer belts 6 and feedrollers 7 supported on a hydraulic ram 4. Capacitor plate 14 is mounted on an insulating block 13 in a slot in the backboard 9 for height adjustment - a unit 24 such as a transistor oscillator starts to oscillate, when the stack reaches a selected height, to actuate a solenoid valve controlling the hydraulic ram. Modifications:- (i) In Fig. 3 (not shown) the capacitor plate may be carried by an eccentrically mounted disc (29) for height adjustment (ii) two capacitor plates may be provided for individual or common control of two stacks on the layboy (iii) it is suggested that the detector arrangement is applicable to conductive sheets.
