Abstract
1,149,981. Rotary pumps and compressors. O. LUTZ. June 20, 1967 [June 20, 1966], No.28436/67. Heading F1F. A rotary positive-displacement pump or compressor, comprises at least four flexible flat blades or vanes 28, 30, 32, 34 clamped at the corners of a casing 2, which has an internal profile in a transverse cross-section of substantially square or equilateral polygonal shape to suit the number of vanes, the vanes being situated between a pair of circular plates or webs 20, 22 carrying a crank-pin 16 of a crank-shaft 14 that is driven by a journal 50 and preferably supported by bearings 10, 12 in end covers 6, 8 for the casing, and the crank-pin being furnished with a freely rotatable sleeve 38 that engages with the vanes so as to form a plurality of chambers I--IV of variable volume. In operation, the working fluid, e.g. atmospheric air, enters the chambers whose volumes are increasing through a bore 42 and an annular groove 40 in the end cover 6, and an arcuate slot 39 in the web 20, said fluid being subsequently discharged from these chambers when their volumes are decreasing through an arcuate slot 44 in the web 22 and an annular groove 44 in the end cover 8 communicating with a pipe or hose connecting-piece 48. In a first modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the slots 39, 44 are located in the web 22 at different radii, the bore 42 and groove 40 being situated in the adjacent end cover 8 radially beyond the groove 46, which is separated from the groove 40 by a sealing ring (54) in said end cover engaging with the web 22. In a second modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the crank-shaft 14 is replaced by a straight shaft (60) carrying an eccentric (62) in place of the crank-pin, the webs 20, 22 being retained. The crank-shaft 14 may be supported by the bearings 10, 12 as aforesaid, or a single bearing (not shown) at one end thereof; and the sleeve 38 may be dispensed with. The blades 28, 30, 32, 34 may be made of spring steel or graphitic carbon, and each of them may be constituted by a plurality of separate laminae (not shown). The sleeve 38 may be made of anti-friction material e.g. graphite or P.T.F.E., and the blades may be provided with a coating of P.T.F.E. on their faces adjacent the sleeve.
