Abstract

1,149,421. Treating graphite. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 3 May, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 19443/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] A graphite block is treated by being surrounded with a continuous layer of a powdered refractory substance, e.g. coke, metal carbide, or carbon black, whch layer has a low thermal and electrical conductivity and is inert to carbon at an elevated temperature, and then heated to a uniform temp. of 3100- 3650‹ C. in the absence of mechanical pressure, and at such a temperature mechanical pressure is applied to the block via the refractory layer, the pressure being applied for 5 minutes or less by means of pistons in the direction in which the block was drawn or extruded, the pressing action being interrupted when the distance between the pistons reaches a predetermined value at which desired coefficients of thermal expansion and density are obtained. Such graphite blocks may be used in the construction of the moderators of nuclear reactors, (see Division G6) the array and the desired coefficients of thermal expansion being such that the effects of higher expansion on the reactor core are minimized.
