Abstract

1,149,198. Compacting powders. CINCINNATI SHAPER CO. 15 Sept., 1966 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 41290/66. Heading B5A. In a multi-platen powder compacting press for producing stepped articles 50 within a die 60 by the compression of a motor driven eccentric actuated upper punch 16, the die 60 is supported in an upper platen 13 and is provided with a lower core punch 18, and with a plurality of telescoped lower dies 61, 62, 63 which are respectively mounted on an intermediate platen 14, a lower platen 15 and the bed of the machine; the platens 13, 14 and 15 are floatingly mounted on heavy guide rods and are supported by fluid pressure so that they float downwardly under the effect of the punch 16 until, at the termination of the compression stroke, the platens 15, 14 are successively halted upon engagement with stop rods 24, 23 respectively whereafter, upon continued descent of platen 13, the stop rods 24, 23 are successively engaged by adjustable rods 26, 25, dependent from platen 13, and simultaneously released from engagement with their respective platens so that the top surfaces of die 62 on platen 15 and then die 61 on platen 14 are successively brought into alignment with the top surface of die 60 and then move together into alignment with the fixed lower punch 63, for ejection of the article 50 after core 18 has been withdrawn by hydraulic actuation. The rods 25, 26 are vertically adjustable to vary the timing and order of the ejection sequence from a pair of cranks (30, 31), (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) mounted on platen (13) and the rotation whereof, via a pinion drive, rotates pinions 42, 43 in the threaded bores whereof are engaged externally threaded portions of the ejection rods 26, 25. Diametrically opposed pairs of each ejection rod 26, 25 are provided for co-operation with diametrically opposed pairs of the stop rods 24, 23.
