Abstract

1,148,424. Dodecanolactam. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 March, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 18282/67. Heading C2C. Dodecanolactam is produced by reacting a monosubstituted cyclododecane with a nitrosating agent in the presence of chlorosulphonic acid. The substituent in the monosubstituted cyclododecane is preferably an electron withdrawing group, for example an hydroxyalkyl, ketone, sulphone, carboxylic acid or carboxylic ester group. The nitrosating agent may be nitrous acid or any derivative of nitrous acid such as sodium nitrite, an alkyl nitrite, nitrous anhydride, nitrosyl chloride or bromide, nitrosyl sulphuric acid anhydride or nitrosyl sulphuric acid. The chlorosulphonic acid may be the sole reaction medium or may be mixed with sulphuric acid or oleum or with an inert organic solvent. The reaction is usually carried out at temperatures within the range 25‹ to 150‹ C.
