An austenitic manganese steel comprises:- Cr 1-2% Si 0À15-0À7% Mn 10À5-14% V 0À25-1À5% C 0À9-1À4% the balance, apart from impurities such as up to 0À04% each of S and P, being iron. The alloys may be heated at 2000‹ F, cooled to 1750‹ F. and then water quenched or the casting may be water quenched from above 1700‹ F.
