Abstract

1,148,238. Lathes. HITACHI SEIKI K.K. 6 Oct., 1967 [6 Oct., 1966], No. 45667/67. Headings B3B and B3T. In a capstan lathe having a slide 1 carrying a tool turret 3 and which is guided for longitudinal movement with respect to the bed 5 in a saddle 2 mounted on the bed, means for supporting and guiding the forward end of the slide 1 comprises a carriage 11 movable with the slide 1 and which is supported on the bed by resiliently mounted roller 20 located in respective recesses 16 in the carriage and guide shoes 23 supported from the carriage and engageable with the underside of the bed. The resilient means supporting the rollers 20 is in the form of springs 18 the combined reactive force of which is greater than the total dead weight of the tool turret and associated parts including the tools. The shoes 23 are pivotally supported on links 22 mounted on adjustable pins 25 on the carriage and the extent of the swinging movement of the links is controlled by eccentrics 27 and 28 positioned one on each side of the link on the carriage so that with the advance and retraction of the carriage 11 with the slide 1 and the friction between the shoes and the bed the link swings backwards and forwards respectively which permits successive controlled deflection and release of the end of the slide whereby a machining action followed by a relief action is effected by the cutting tool. The carriage is automatically engaged by and released from the forward end of the slide during the advance and return movements respectively by a spring biased lever and catch mechanism, Figs. 15, 16 and 17 (not shown), so that when the slide is traversed across the saddle 2 in a feed direction the carriage 11 is engaged with the saddle thus forming a common unit. The carriage is subsequently disengaged from the slide as the slide traverses the saddle on its return movement.
