Abstract

An instrument for measuring the hardness of rubber comprises a durometer 10 having a presser foot 11 for penetrating the surface of a test specimen 43 and means 14 for measuring the depth of said penetration, means 17, 18, 19, 22 for supporting the durometer for vertical movement relative to a fixed base 20 and toward and away from said specimen, co-operating cam 28 and cam follower 24 one of which is rotatably mounted on the base 20 and supporting the whole of the dead weight of the durometer and supported means, and means 34 in the form of a motor for rotating the cam 28 which is effective to move the supporting means relative to the base and thus to move said durometer. The durometer is mounted for movement up and down column 19, the anvil 21 extending from the base of the column. A stabilizing arm 22 is secured to a bracket 18 on the durometer assembly the cam follower 24 being mounted on the underside of said arm. The cam 28 is provided with three lobes on its circumferential surface which move the durometer towards and away from the test piece three times for each revolution of the cam, one of the lobes being larger to allow time for the test piece to be placed on the anvil. Three readings are therefore obtained for each test piece from which an average reading can be calculated. The durometer is restricted to vertical movement by a guide 39 in which stabilizing arm 22 slides.
