Abstract

1,148,016. Plates from wood chips &c. DEUTSCHE NOVOPAN & CO. G.m.b.H. 17 March, 1967 [17 March, 1966], No. 12526/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] Plates or moulded bodies are made by extrusion or hot-pressing of a mass of wood chips, wood fibres or lignified raw materials mixed with binding agents which include an isocyanate solution. The isocyanate is preferably a solution of diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate, toluene 2,4-diisocyanate or naphthalene 1,5-diisocyanate and is used in 2-20% by weight relative to the dry ligneous material, the isocyanate being applied either mixed with or after the urea-formaldehyde, melamineformaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde resin preferably used as the binding agent. A compound with free OH groups, e.g. glycerine, pinacone, ethylene glycol, polyethers or polyesters may be sprayed or spread on to the surface to prevent the moulded mass from sticking to the mould; the boiling-points of the compounds being higher than or not considerably lower than the pressing temperature. Animal and fungi resistance may also be increased by the addition of alkali metal fluorides and bifluoride, boron compounds, chromium or copper in powder form or pentachlorophenol to the shavings before processing. The pentachlorophenol combines with the isocyanate and is not removed during presssing. The impregnation process may be carried out by adding the resin binder to the wood, mixing for 5-60 minutes at 20‹ C. or for a shorter period at 50-90‹ C. under, for example, an eddy current dryer which removes water, the temperature being insufficient to cure the resin, and then treating with isocyanate and pressing.
