Abstract

1,147,796. Epoxy bonded glass fibre laminates. CIBA Ltd. 7 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 15708/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions C3, F1 and F2] A laminated constructional element, the design of which is such that in the use for which it is designed it is subjected simultaneously to both static mechanical stress and stress caused by vibration comprises shaped layers of resinimpregnated glass fibre, the resin being a cured epoxy resin formed by curing (1) a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, e.g. an epoxy resin of the formula where R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen or methyl groups, vinyl cyclohexene diepoxide, limonene diepoxide, dicyclopentadiene diepoxide or an epoxidized adduct of 1 mol. of glycerine with 2 mols. of dicyclopentadiene, or a mixture of a major proportion of a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin with another epoxy resin, e.g. a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol; (2) a polycarboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. maleic, hexahydrophthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, methyl hexahydrophthalic, methyl nadicanic, chlorendic, phthalic or pyromellitic anhydride and optionally (3) a flexibilizer, e.g. a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol with or without cure accelerators, e.g. tris-(dimethylaminomethyl)- phenol or sodium hexylate. Example 1 describes the preparation of a cylinder head cover using a plurality of layers of glass fabric impregnated with the resin composition. The Specification also describes the preparation of glass fabric laminates.
