Abstract

1,147,042. Centrifugal separators. REYNOLDS METALS CO. 23 Feb., 1966 [26 Feb., 1965], No. 19289/67. Divided out of 1147041. Heading B2P. [Also in Division C7] A centrifugal apparatus for the treatment of molten metal consists of a bowl formed by a rotatable base 30 and a stationary wall 33. 'Molten metal is fed into the bowl and is cooled until coherent skeletal solid phase containing an entrained liquid phase is formed. The base 30 is then rotated and with the solid phase centred by the projection 32, the liquid phase is expelled through the gap between the base and the wall. The projection 32 may be replaced by a supporting cone which is used to lift out the solid phase at the end of the separation.
