[Also in Division B2] A polymeric product is obtained by subjecting a mixture of gaseous or vaporous substances to an electric glow discharge, in which process at least one of the substances contains carbon, at least one of the substances cannot be polymerized alone by the glow discharge, and in which the substances are so chosen that they react chemically under the influence of the glow discharge. The polymerization may be performed in the presence of a substrate to produce a coating. The polymeric products are not normally copolymers of the starting materials but contain a wide variety of structural units resulting from the fragmentation in the glow discharge. The following combination of substances are specified: acetylene/H 2 S, H 2 Se, PH 3 , AlH 3 , NH 3 , or volatile organo-metallic compounds, e.g. Zn(C 2 H 5 ) 2 ; the above combinations in which acetylene is replaced by C 2 N 2 , HCN, vinyl acetylene, acrylonitrile or methyl vinyl ketone; benzene/silane, silicon halide or halosilane to produce polysilphenylene; benzene/titanium halide to produce polytitanium phenylene, and analogous A1 compounds; benzene/H 2 S, SO 2 , or a sulphur halide to produce polyphenylene sulphide; polyaluminosiloxane from an alkoxy-substituted silane and an aluminium alkyl or halidepolypyromellitimide from pyromellitic acid and ammonia; the production of polyphenylene oxide and sulphone are also mentioned.
