Abstract
1,146,429. Radio navigation. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 11 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1736/68. Heading H4D. The Specification describes a phase difference measuring system in general, with particular reference to its use in a radio direction-finding arrangement, wherein radiations from a satellite are received at two spaced ground stations 24, 25, with phases, the difference between as determined by said system, represents the direction of the satellite. Ground station 24, receiving first signal F o |#α 1 comprises a first phase locked loop 4/12 which produces an output signal 13 |#α 1 +# 1 from a voltage controlled oscillator 8. Ground station 25 receiving second signal F 0 | #α 2 also comprises a phase locked loop 14/18, 20/23 into which, by means of mixer 19, the output signal of the first phase locked loop is introduced, whereby the output of the voltage controlled oscillator 18 is a signal having a phase |#α 2 - α 1 + #2 - # 1 containing the desired phase difference term |#α 2 - α 1 . In station 24 (station 25 being substantially similar), the signal F 0 |#α 1 at the output of amplifier 3, is converted to an IF signal 30|## 1 in mixer 4 by means of a signal (F o +30)|#α 1 +# 1 from mixer 9. The IF signal is then phase compared at 6 with a reference signal 30 90‹ and a resultant signal representative of # 1 is passed via low-pass filter 7 to the control terminal of voltage controlled oscillator 8. The output 13|#α 1 +# 1 of the oscillator 8 is converted to the signal (F 0 +30) |#α 1 +# 1 in mixer 9 by means of signal (F 0 +17)|#0‹. Fig. 4 shows an embodiment wherein phase shifts produced by amplifier 3 are allowed for and counteracted. A mathematical explanation of the invention is given.
