Abstract

1,146,323. Variable-speed friction gears. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 8 March, 1967 [9 March, 1966], No. 10574/67. Heading F2D. A variable-speed friction gear comprises precessing rollers 24 which are engaged between axially loaded toric driving and driven discs 30, 32, one of which includes a fluid-pressure loading piston as described in Specification 1,146,321, each roller being mounted in a tilting carriage 76 with ball ends 88, 80 respectively engaging in parallel laterally displaced cylinders 92, 98 in the carriage support spiders 17. Each ball 88 engages a loading piston 86 supplied with pressure liquid from the disc loading piston, a screw stop 106 limiting outward movement of the piston. Each ball 80 engages a guide sleeve 96 screwed into the bore 98 and locked in position by a plug 97. The pressure liquid for the pistons 86 is supplied from the disc loading piston to chambers 132 in the spider hubs, Fig. 9, from which it is fed through passages 109, 110 in the spider arms, the end of each passage 110 having a screwed plug 111 with an orifice for damping oscillations of the pistons 86.
