Abstract
1,146,052. Railway vehicle knuckle couplers. SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 March, 1966 [7 April, 1965 (2)], No. 13082/66. Heading B7T. The knuckle 2 may be held in its open or ready for coupling position by providing the knuckle with a protrusion 7 adapted to engage in a recess 5 between shoulders 6 in a lower pivot lug or ear 3. At the time of coupling a strong force is required by the mating knuckle to rotate the knuckle 2. In Figs. 9-11 (not shown) the knuckle tail is formed with a rebated surface (11) on which a vertically movable lock member (12) may sit when the knuckle is open. Accidental or vibrational movement of the knuckle to the closed position is prevented by an upwardly inclined cam surface 10 up which the lock must be moved to allow the knuckle to close.
