Abstract

1,145,780. Chain tensioners. DR.-ING. h.c.F. PORSCHE K.G. 11 Sept., 1967 [1 Oct., 1966], No. 41316/67. Heading F2Q. A chain tensioning device 12 comprises a piston 16, Fig. 2, to which a belt or chain contacting shoe 13 is pivotally connected, a cylinder 17, pivotally connected to a supporting structure 19, a helical spring 18 surrounding the piston 16 and cylinder 18 and forcing them apart, and a reservoir 25 surrounding the cylinder 18 and communicating therewith by means of a ball check valve 24 which allows fluid to flow only from the reservoir 25 to the cylinder 26. The shoe 13 is pivotally mounted at the end 14 remote from the tensioning device 12. In a modified form of tensioning device 11, a piston 16<SP>1</SP> and cylinder 17<SP>1</SP> are each provided with a dome-shaped end 31 adapted to engage an adjustable cup bearing 34 on the housing and a cup bearing 32 on a shoe 13.
