Abstract

[Also in Division D2] Cigarette filter tips are made by using a gas to foam an aqueous slurry of cellulose fibres containing a surfactant and a vinyl acetate polymer emulsion, draining liquid from the foam to form a porous sponge the pores in which are coated with a vinyl acetate polymer film, then wrapping the sponge with paper to hold it in the form of a rod having a density of not greater than 0.14 g/cc. The sponge may be initially cast into a sheet which is then sliced into strips to be compressed into the rods, or the sponge can be formed directly into a rod shape. The gas may be air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The drained foam may be heated to increase the size of the cells in the sponge. The fibres may be natural or man-made cellulose fibres. The surfactant may be sodium lauryl sulphate containing free lauryl alcohol, long chain sulphonic acids, long chain alkybenzensulphonic acids, long chain alkanol-amides and long chain quaternary ammonium compounds. The polymer may be vinyl acetate homopolymer or copolymers of vinyl acetate and dibutyl fumarate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl alcohol or dibutyl maleate. The amount of polymer in the dry sponge can be 10-20% wt. of the cellulose present. The filters may also contain charcoal ferric oxide, triacetin polyethylene glycol, triethyl aceate, dimethyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate.
