Apparatus for the preparation of embedded microscope specimens comprises an evacuable chamber 1, a container 2 for the specimen 5 to be embedded, and a supply tube 3, slidable through lid 1', having a cover 2" by which container 2 may be sealed from chamber 1 after evacuation, a polymerizable carrier then being introduced from reservoir 4 into container 2 for impregnation of the specimen. By this means, the interior of chamber 1 and the vacuum pump are not contaminated by the carrier. Specimen 5 rests on a cooling or heating apparatus 6, and a thermometer 7 is provided. Tube 3 may contain a further coaxial tube through which carrier vapour is supplied to container 2 before the liquid is introduced. Pretreatment of the specimen by excited gases such as oxygen is also possible by this means, the gas being excited by high-frequency discharge from an electrode surrounding container 2. This treatment increases wetting of the specimen by the carrier. Container 2 is again evacuated before admitting the carrier. Container 2 may be transparent to ultraviolet radiation by which polymerization of the carrier is achieved.
