Apparatus for conveying flat articles 3, e.g. slabs of chocolate, soap &c., to packaging machines 5 (the inlet to only one being indicated) comprises a primary conveyer 1 from which the articles are transferred on to secondary conveyers 4 (only one shown) and an additional conveyer 4<SP>1</SP> to feed the articles which have been fed past the secondary conveyer to a magazine 10 in which the articles are arranged on trays 12 and stacked. The conveyer 1 comprises plates 2 which are tilted when the conveyer is above one of the conveyers 4 or 4<SP>1</SP> to transfer the articles on to a respective pair of shutters (7), Fig. 3 (not shown), which move outwards to release the articles which fall on to the conveyer. When one of the packaging machines 5 or one of the conveyer 4 ceases to operate, there may be an excess of articles on the conveyer 1 which are fed past the secondary conveyers whereupon a photoelectric sensing device 13 causes the excess articles to be transferred to the additional conveyer 4<SP>1</SP>. When the articles are adjacent the magazine 10 the conveyer 4<SP>1</SP> stops and the articles are pushed by a pusher (8), Fig. 3 (not shown, transversely on to a tray 12 which has been fed on to the vertically reciprocating base (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), of the magazine 10. The base (17) raises the trayed articles past spring biased hooks 2a, which are displaced outwards by the tray but pivot under it immediately it is past them. The base (17) is lowered to receive the next tray. Any succeeding trays (12<SP>1</SP>) push the previous trays (12<SP>11</SP>) (12<SP>111</SP>) upwards and support them. The stack 27 of trayed articles may be removed and placed on a table 28 for transfer to the conveyer 4 when required.
