Abstract

1,144,661. Drying coal briquettes; heating and cooling briquettes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 2 May, 1966 [2 Feb., 1965], No. 4475/65. Headings F4G and F4U. [Also in Division C5] Coal briquettes are heated and/or cooled in a fluidized bed of sand in which the briquettes and the sand are moved horizontally in countercurrent, the briquettes being in suspension in the sand. The briquettes are moved by the pressure applied by incoming briquettes from an inlet 4 to an outlet 5 over a perforated base 2 against a fluidized bed of sand which is circulated through a heating or cooling vessel 7. Fluidization may be continuous or intermittent, and the fluidizing gas may be heated, or a fuel may be burnt in the bed, e.g. where carbonization is desired. Alternatively, the fluidizing gas may be cooled, and cooling water sprays may be provided in the base. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown), some sand, optionally after being cooled, by-passes the heating vessel 7 and is returned to the bed near the briquette exit, for cooling purposes.
