Abstract
1,144,601. Tetracycline antibiotics. ANKERFARM S.p.A. 29 March, 1966 [30 March, 1965], No. 13937/66. Heading C2A. [Also in Division A5] A process for producing an animal feed or animal feed supplement which comprises culturing Streptomyces T457 (C.B.S. 405.68), Streptomyces C1842 (C.B.S. 404.68) or Streptomyces 02824 (C.B.S. 403.68) in a nutrient medium therefor to produce a tetracycline antibiotic and formulating an animal feed or animal feed supplement from (a) the resultant whole broth; (b) the broth after removal of the tetracycline (Vitamin B 12 is coproduced); or (c) the tetracycline antibiotic and part of the residual fermentation broth containing growth factors and/or proteins. The Streptomyces are cultivated in a conventional manner. A preferred source of protein and growth factors is extract of Zea maize plants. For increased production of the coproduced Vitamin B 12 , the medium contains cobalt salts. The tetracycline antibiotic, which in the case of Streptomyces C1842 is mainly chlortetracycline, may be stabilized by the addition of the corresponding 4-epimer, namely 4-epi-7-chlorotetracycline. This is most conveniently obtained by heating the fermentation broth at an acid pH, e.g. for 2 hours at pH 3À2 at 50-60‹ C., followed by the addition of lime to a pH 6À0. Streptomyces T457 is a tetracycline-producer and Streptomyces 02824 is an oxytetracycline-producer.
