Abstract

1,144,258. Grinding springs. ASSOCIATED SPRING CORP. 19 Aug., 1967, No. 38301/67. Heading B3D. The ends of helical springs are ground as they are passed between opposed grinding wheels 24, 26 by a rotatable carrier 8, the springs being fed directly to holes 10 in the carrier from a coiler A by a tube 6. The carrier is rotated above a fixed supporting plate 32 for the springs by a flexible drive 18 operated by a chain 22 and cam shaft 20 on the coiler. The discharge end of the tube 6 is held by a resilient arm 40 over one of the circular rows of holes 10. The rows may be of various sizes and the grinding wheels may be adjusted to suit different sizes of springs. The carrier is rotated continuously while the end of the tube 6 is caused to oscillate by the intermittent engagement and disengagement of a pin 46 controlled by a cam surface 62 on the carrier. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the carrier is intermittently stopped to receive a spring from a fixed tube by means of a pin (100) operated by a piston-and-cylinder arrangement controlled by a cam (114) and valve (118), the drive for the carrier being constituted by a pair of nylon clutch plates (76, 78) which slip each time the carrier is stopped by the pin. In a third embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), two or more tubes (6, 6a) are provided for feeding springs to more than one row of holes at a time, the springs produced by the coiler being fed into the tubes by a reciprocating or oscillating device, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The springs may also be set by compressing them to their solid condition before the grinding operation by means of a solenoid-operated plunger (182), Fig. 7 (not shown), while being transported by the carrier, the plunger being mounted on an arm (160) which is connected to the resilient arm (40) by a link (162) fcr following the oscillating movements between switches (186, 190) as the arm (40) rides on cam surface (62); alternatively, the springs may be compressed after grinding, Fig. 8 (not shown) or both before and after grinding Fig. 9 (not shown).
