Abstract

1,144,163. Fluorocarbon elastomer compositions. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 3 Nov., 1966 [3 Aug., 1965; 30 Nov., 1965 (2)], Nos. 33119/65, 50766/65 and 50767/65. Heading C3P. A sealant composition includes a low molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer and a high molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer of which at least the low molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer has been chemically modified so as to introduce therein unsaturated carbonto-carbon linkages. A preferred composition includes a low molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer containing unsaturated carbon-tocarbon linkages and a high molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer. The terms " high and low molecular weight " mean average values of less than 20,000 and greater than 40,000 respectively. The compositions may be prepared by chemically modifying a low molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer, e.g. by dissolving the elastomer in an alkyl substituted amide solvent wherein it reacts with the solvent and undergoes a process of dehydrofluorination or by allylation, so as to introduce therein unsaturated carbon-to-carbon linkages and blending the resulting elastomer with a high molecular weight fluorocarbon elastomer. In the examples are used copolymers of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride with or without tetrafluoroethylene, Friedel-Crafts resin (a high molecular weight resin based on diphenyl oxide and dimethyl ether of p-xylylene glycol), medium thermal black, magnesium oxide, dicinnamylidene-1, styrene, diallyl phthalate, a linear polyamide resin, triethylene tetramine, and hexamethylene diamine.
