Abstract
1,143,527. Smelting furnaces. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 11161/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for the continuous production of steel (Fig. 2) consists of a furnace having a smelting zone A communicating on the same level with refining zone D provided with lances 132, 133, 134 and with slag settling zone C having a weir 137 and well 144. Ore from a preheating and prereducing kiln is discharged through tower 123 into zone A, where the metal bath is caused to circulate by tangential lances 128a and 128b, and possibly also by the tangential introduction of molten pig iron. Flow of metal between zone A and zone C or D is restricted by refractory banks 135, while flow of slag is facilitated by inclined lances 135a, 136a, and by the inclination of lances 132, 133, 134 towards the smelting zone. Zone C may be subdivided by a slag bridge formed by a fluidcooled tube or by a low angle gas jet (Figs. 4, 4a, not shown.) The kiln preheater may be replaced by a rilling preheater in which the ore is caused to travel over an inclined hearth by an oscillating ram (Fig. 6), or may be replaced by a fluidized bed preheater, the ore being further heated and impelled into the bath by a burner (Fig. 8).
