Abstract
1,142,351. Chloromethanes. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 16 March, 1966 [23 March, 1965], No. 11568/66. Heading C2C. Methyl chloride is prepared by the reaction of methanol with hydrogen chloride in the presence of zinc chloride, the process comprising (a) dispersing an aqueous 50-80% by weight solution of zinc chloride in methanol and/or gaseous hydrogen chloride, the aqueous solution becoming the discontinuous phase and the methanol and/or hydrogen chloride becoming the continuous phase, and if necessary contacting the dispersion with hydrochloric acid or methanol respectively, and (b) separating aqueous zinc chloride solution from the reaction products to leave a product containing methyl chloride. The hydrogen chloride used may be that formed by the chlorination of one or more of CH 4 , CH 3 C1, CH 2 Cl 2 or CHC1 3 with Cl 2 in known manner, and may be used in the form of the mixture of products resulting from such a reaction, said mixture containing chloromethanes in addition to hydrogen chloride.
