In making articles having multi-layer walls and channels, e.g. waveguides, by electro-deposition of metal on to uninsulated metal surfaces of a mandrel, e. g. of stainless steel, enveloping the deposited metal layer with plastics, and then withdrawing the mandrel, the electro-deposition is effected using an alkaline electrolyte of high throwing power. Examples of suitable plating baths are those of the cyanide type for silver and the pyrophosphate and ethylenediamine types for copper, while reference is also made to the suitability of a stannate tin bath and of the use of an alkaline ethanolamine bath. A class of coating plastic specifically referred to is an epoxy resin and reference is made to improving its adhesion to an electro-deposited layer of copper by the use of a phenolformaldehyde cement. As shown a stepped central mandrel 1 is releasably secured to an end mandrel 3 and a pre-fabricated metal element 6 to be incorporporated in the finished product is located by a flange mandrel 4 which results in the production of a waveguide with a lateral hole. The portions of the mandrels and the element 6 not to be electro-plated are covered by casings 10, 11, 12, 13 of ebonite or polythene. The deposited metal layer may be built up with solder at depressions and places of mating or jointing of the mandrel surfaces before applying the plastics material. Reference is also made to making waveguides with rectangular, circular, H- or H- shaped crosssection with curved or twisted as well as rectilinear channels.
