Abstract

1,142,182. Aryl ether-sulphones. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 17 March, 1967 [18 March, 1966; 27 April, 1966], No. 12693/67. Heading C2C. The invention comprises aryl ether-sulphones of the formula in which R is an optionally substituted mono- or poly-nuclear aromatic radical. They are prepared by reacting 1 mole of a dihalo-diphenyl sulphone with approximately 2 moles of a di-alkali metal phenolate of a dihydric phenol in the presence of a strongly polar organic solvent at 100-160‹ C., and acidifying the product. Suitable polar organic solvents are, for example, diethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl 1 sulphone, diethyl sulphone, diisopropyl sulphone and tetramethyl sulphone. Preferably the phenolate is formed from the phenol and alkali metal hydroxide simultaneously with the production of the ether.
