Abstract

1,141,874. Heating yarn electrically. STAVELEY-SMITH CONTROLS Ltd. 22 Nov., 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 37527/66. Heading H5H. A heater for yarn 16 passed in heat exchange relationship with a heat exchange surface of the heater comprises a sealed chamber 11 containing a liquid 15 and its vapour and an electrical heating element 14, the major part of the heat extracted from the surface being derived from the latent heat of vaporization of the fluid and the temperature of the heating surface being controlled by varying the operation of element 14. Copper tube 11 has an insulating jacket 12, the insulation being omitted along the path of travel of the yarn 16. Alternatively, the yarn passes down a metal tube 17 internally of the chamber 11, Fig. 2 (not shown). A thermal sensitive element 18 is held in an end plug 13 to be responsive to the temperature of the heater, the element 18 controlling energization of heating element 14. A fusible plug or release valve 19 protects the heater from excessive vapour pressures. The path of travel of the yarn 16 may be helical.
