The adhesion of reinforcing cords, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate cords, to rubber is improved by dipping them in a first dip consisting of a poly functional epoxy compound having at least two epoxy groups in the molecule with or without a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an ethylenic monomer as crosslinking agent in solution in an organic solvent or dispersion in water containing an emulsifying agent drying them while under tension and dipping them in a second dip comprising an aqueous emulsion of a styrene-butadienevinyl pyridine latex and a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. The polyfunctional epoxy compound which may be a partially epoxidised unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon may be present in an amount of 1-10% by weight and may be in the form of a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. methyl isobutyl ketone or a mixture thereof with acetone or an aromatic hydrocarbon, or a dispersion in water containing a suitable emulsifying agent, e.g. a sorbitan derivative emulsifier. The first dip may also contain as cross-linking agent a copolymer of maleic anhydride and styrene, which may be at least partially neutralised with a base, in an amount of 0.2-10% by weight. The second drip may contain 10-25% by weight of the styrene-butadiene-vinyl pyridine latex and 1-5% by weight of the resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. After the second dip the cords may be dried under tension.
