Abstract
1,141,781. Antibiotics. BEECHAM GROUP Ltd. 16 Jan., 1968 [19 Jan., 1967; 16 June., 1967], Nos. 2883/67 and 28011/67. Heading A5B. Therapeutic compositions for the treatment of infections due to gram-negative organisms, particularly pseudomonas, comprise in admixture (a) α - carboxybenzylpenicillin (carbenicillin) or α - carboxy - 2 - (or - 3 -) thienylmethylpenicillin or a non-toxic salt thereof and (b) gentamicin or a polymyxin, or a non-toxic salt thereof. The component (b) may comprise polymyxin B or polymyxin E (colistin) or non-toxic salts thereof (e.g. polymyxin B sulphatem or colistin methane sulphonate) or gentamicin sulphate. The penicillins may be in the form of their non-toxic salts e.g. Na, K, Ca, Al, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts, such as salts with triethylamine, procaine, dibenzylamine, N - benzyl - # - phenethylamine, 1 - ephenamine, N,N'-dibenzylethylenediamine, dehydroabietylamine and N,N'-bisdehydroabietylethylenediamine. The compositions are administered parenterally in the form of aqueous or non-aqueous solutions or suspensions containing pharmaceutically acceptable liquid carriers or diluents.
