Contaminated water treated by an activated sludge process is passed to a flotation chamber where by injection of aerated liquid the sludge is caused to float to the surface for removal. Chemical treatments of the water, combinations of such flotation processes in series and in parallel and the return of activated sludge by compressed air are also described.
