In a method of making electrically conductive material, liquid metal is injected into a porous matrix. The matrix may be made by the process used in the formation of porous barriers for isotope separation, and it may be made from nickel, P.T.F.E. or " Teflon " (Trade Mark). Alternatively the matrix may be of sintered nickel. In the former type of matrix, the pores have a diameter of the order of 0À01 Á and in the latter a diameter of the order of 0À1 Á so that after the metal has been injected therein it is drawn or rolled until the pore dimensions have been reduced by 90% in one direction. Lead, nickel-lead or tin-bismuth may be injected into a metal matrix or tin into an insulated matrix.
