An expanding coupling device for securing a flywheel 40 on a shaft 42, or in Fig. 5 (not shown), coupling two unequal, or equal, diameter shafts (50, 52), comprises a pair of split conical rings (22, 24), Fig. 1 (not shown), arranged in or on a slotted, or unslotted doubleconical sleeve 32, Fig. 4 or Fig. 5 (not shown), respectively, and contracted, or in Fig. 3 (not shown) expanded, by screws 26, 28 which freely pass through one ring and screw into the other so as to draw together the split rings (22, 24) to frictionally clamp the assembly. Keys (not shown) may be fitted in the slots (34), (23) of the split sleeve (32) and rings (22, 24), Fig. 1 (not shown), to additionally provide positive drive.
