Abstract

1,139,955. Holography; cinematography. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov.2, 1966 [Nov.22, 1965], No.49230/66. Headings G2C and G2E. A duplicate hologram record pressing is made by recording a hologram, or succession of holograms, as a relief pattern on a master surface 416 and transferring by pressing the relief pattern on the master surface on to a record blank. Light from a laser 400 is split into two beams by a semi-reflecting mirror 404, one beam 406 illuminating a frame 440 of a motion picture film 434 and the other beam 405 forming the reference beam. A hologram of this frame is recorded on a small area of the surface 416 which may comprise a silver emulsion, a photo resist, or a thermoplastic material. The surface 416 is then rotated and translated, and the film advanced one frame prior to recording the next frame, so that the film is recorded as a spiral centred on the axis of the disc-shaped surface 416. The apparatus described may be modified to record colour motion pictures, either in three concentric spirals one of each of the colours red, blue, green, or in one spiral, every third hologram being of the same colour. After the surface 416 has been fully recorded, it is developed or processed if required in order to obtain the holograms in relief, then covered with a thin metal coating, and then a pressing is made therefrom. The duplicate pressing may be transparent or coated with a highly reflective metal film, and is read by illuminating with laser light, information so obtained being displayed directly on a screen, converted to electrical form for use in a data processing system, fed to an image intensifier, or picked up by a television camera arrangement and displayed on a monochrome or colour television screen, Figs. 13, 14 (not shown).
