Abstract

1,139,912. Coiled tubes. T. F. MOSS. 11 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965; 27 July, 1965], Nos. 6466/65 and 32079/65. Heading F2P. An extensible coil particularly for providing airline brake services between tractor and trailer elements of an articulated vehicle comprises two or more tubes 2 and 3 of thermoformable thermoplastics material, such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene or nylon, which are twisted together and wound into the form of a coil. One or more individually insulated electrical wires may be twisted together with the tubes to provide electrical services between the tractor and trailer, the wires being preferably coated directly with a thermoformable plastics or the normal polyvinyl chloride insulation being thus coated. The twisted tubes are wound into coil form on a mandrel and the assembly heated with steam or by immersion in a water or oil bath to about 100-120‹ C. The coil is then cooled and removed from the mandrel, said coil retaining its formed shape. The twisted tubes may be inserted into a sleeve 6, which may also be of extruded thermoformable plastics material, such as polyvinyl chloride, before forming the coil. Alternatively, the sleeve may longitudinally slit to receive tubes and wires. The tube ends are provided with unions 4 and nylon collars 5. The retracted coil form may be of any desired shape, such as cylindrical, tapered, double-tapered, or flat.
