Abstract

1,139,907. Damped resilient couplings. BORG-WARNER CORP. 18 April, 1966, No. 16958/66. Heading F2U. A heavy-duty vibration damper for a clutch plate comprises a pair of rigidly connected driving plates 16, 18 frictionally engaging a driven hub 10 at their inner peripheries, a pair of rigidly connected intermediate plates 30, 31 frictionally engaging a flange 11 of the hub 10 and two sets of cushion springs R, R<SP>1</SP> in apertures, 40, 41, 44, 45, 46, 40<SP>1</SP>, 41<SP>1</SP>, 44<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>1</SP>, 46<SP>1</SP> in the plates 16, 18, 30, 31 and flange 11. The apertures 40, 41, 44, 45 in the plates 16, 18, 30, 31 are of equal length and register with longer apertures 46 in the flange 11 whilst the apertures 40<SP>1</SP>, 41<SP>1</SP>; 44<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>1</SP> and 46<SP>1</SP> respectively have increasing lengths so that initial relative rotation between the plates 16, 18 and hub 10 compresses the spring R until the force on the intermediate plates 30, 31 overcomes the friction between the plates 30, 31 and flange 11 whereupon both pairs of plates move together relative to the hub 10 until the springs R engage the ends of the apertures 46 in the flange 11. Thereafter increasing torque compresses the springs R until a predetermined torque is attained whereupon the springs R<SP>1</SP> are also compressed. The plates may be biased into frictional engagement with the hub 10 and flange 11 by interconnecting means 19, 34 or may (Fig. 5, not shown) be biased into frictional engagement by Belleville springs (74, 75). Fig. 8 (not shown) is a torque/deflection characteristic for the coupling.
