Abstract

1,139,151. Differential gearing; clutches. DANA CORP. 13 Jan., 1966 [13 Jan., 1965(3)1, No. 1761/66. Headings F2C and F2D. In a limited slip bevel differential gear incorporating friction clutches, the latter are formed as preassembled clutch packs 40 for insertion as independent units in the gear housing 10. As shown each pack consists of sets of discs 44 splined to the axles 16, 18 and interleaved discs 42 formed with outer diametral pairs of lugs 50 engaged in axial recesses 52 in the housing 10. One or more of the discs are of conical shape and flattened during assembly, being retained in that condition by straps 60 encircling the lugs 50. The clutch units are rendered operative by axial movement under tooth loading of the side wheels 22, 24, radial clearances 36, 37 being provided between the wheels and housing 10. In a second form, Fig. 9 (not shown), the clutch discs are held in a two - piece U - section cage (62<SP>1</SP>). The lugs may be provided with wear-resistant shoes (54<SP>1</SP>1). Fig. 13 (not shown), or an annular wear plate (42<SP>1</SP>) may be fitted between the clutch and housing, Fig. 18 (not shown). Numerous forms and assemblies of the clutch discs are described.
