Abstract

1,139,130. Urea adducts. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 29 Sept., 1967, No. 44394/67. Heading C5E. A process for the agglomeration of at least substantially solid particles (e.g. of an adduct of a hydrocarbon with urea or thiourea) from a suspension thereof in a liquid, the said suspension comprising at least two solid components, comprises adding to the suspension a pressurized gas which together with an auxiliary compound present in and/or added at the same time to the said suspension and with at least one of the said solid components forms a binder liquid which preferentially wets the solid particles and is immiscible or substantially immiscible with the said liquid. The gas may be ammonia, methylamine, dimethylamine or trimethylamine. The auxiliary substance may be water, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate or ammonium iodide. As applied to the separation of n-paraffins (i.e. wax) from petroleum oils, in which case the two solid components are urea adduct and free urea, ammonia and water are used; the formation of urea ammoniate, the decomposition of ammoniate and formation of adduct, agglomeration and subsequent decomposition of adduct may all be brought about by adjustment of the ammonia pressure.
