Abstract
1,138,995. Treating polyester and polyamide materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 May, 1967 [9 Feb., 1967], No. 6171/67. Heading DIP. [Also in Division B2] A shaped article in the form of a filament, fibre, fabric or film, made from a synthetic fibre-forming polyester or polyamide is given a durable modified surface by subjecting it to thermal treatment at a temperature below the melting temperature of the material of the shaped article while it is in intimate contact with a reactive linear polymeric compound which has a molecular weight of at least 600, contains at least one reactive group which is an amine group, carboxylic acid group or a salt or ester thereof or an isocyanate group and at least one surface modifying polymeric group, which is a water-solvatable polyoxyalkylene group, a liquid repellent group containing siloxane or fluorocarbon segments or a group containing a plurality of alcoholic hydroxyl radicals, in the presence of an inorganic catalyst so that the reactive linear polymeric compound is attached chemically to the surface of the shaped article substantially without crosslinking. The inorganic catalyst may be K 4 Fe (CN) 6 , K 3 Fe (CN) 6 , FeSO 4 (NH4) 2 SO 4 , Na 4 Fe (CN) 5 NH 2 , Na 2 Fe (No) (CN) 5 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , FeSO 4 , iodine, sodium, potassium, lithium or cuprous iodide, hydriodic acid, iodic acid, periodic acid, phosphomolybdic acid, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, potassium thiocyanate, selenium dioxide or potassium dichromate. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of antioxidants, e.g. bis (2-hydiroxy-3-α-methylcyclohexyl-5- methyl-pheriyl)-methane, peroxide decomposers, a dye or optical brightener, At least 1% by weight of the catalyst based on the weight of the reactive polymeric compound may be used.
