A bursting disc for high temperature or corrosive fluids comprises an impermeable and chemically resistant membrane 4 of vitreous carbon on the pressure side, backed by a rupturable resistance plate 5 of graphite or amorphous carbon. Packing rings 1, 6 are interposed between the device and pipe flanges 2, 7. The plate 5 may have a weakening groove to provide a well defined opening on rupture.
