1,138,777. Sterilizing animal feeds. CAPE FEAR FEED PRODUCTS Inc. 8 Aug., 1967 [12 Aug., 1966], No. 36372/67. Headings A2B and A2D. [Also in Division A5] In a continuous process of destroying salmonella in animal feed meals, the meal supplied by hopper 9 is heated in screw conveyer 10 to at least 165‹F. by admixture with dry live steam, maintained in turbulent motion and at at least 165‹F. for 20 mins. in heated bin 30, and cooled to below 120‹F. in screw conveyer 60, which is surrounded by a cooling liquid jacket. The treated meal is subsequently ground, sieved and packed. In the initial stages of the process the meal from bin 30 is recycled to the top of the bin and this recycling process is maintained till the bin is full enough such that the time taken for the meal to pass through the bin is at least 20 mins., when the recycling process is automatically stopped. After the initial stages the meal is fed to and withdrawn from the bin 30 at equal rates. The conveyer 10 comprises a jacketed trough provided with steam or electric heating coils to preheat the conveyer 10. Steam is only admitted to screw conveyer 10 when meal is being supplied by hopper 9. In the bottom of the bin 30 there are a series of augers which lead the meal to reversible conveyer 75 driven by reversible motor 78, which conveyer 75 feeds the meal to recycling means 45, 46, 44 or to cooling conveyer 60.
