Abstract

1,138,467. Making heat exchangers; seaming; soldering. DES USINES CHAUSSON, S.A. 11 Jan., 1966 [14 Jan., 1965], No. 1321/66. Headings B3A, B3J and B3R. A method of making a a heat exchanger core having at least one seamed tube and a number of collector plates 8 comprises, forming a metal strip into a tube having a pair of opposed, substantially parallel sides with a seam 1 along one of the remaining tube sides, the seam being flat crimped between a flat part of a mandrel and a crimping roll, and shaping and finishing the tube between rolls 4, 5 which co-operate with a rounded part 3a of the mandrel to impart a rounded profile to the seam outer surface. The tube, after passing through rolls 4, 5, is finished by a single roll (6), the action of the rolls 4, 5, (6) also serving to reduce the width a-b of a groove at the base of the seam formed during seaming, Fig. 3 (not shown). The tube, which may be of aluminium coated with aluminium silicon alloy brazing metal, is located at either end in apertures 12 formed in plates 8 of similar metal to the tube. The apertures 12 are punched, rather than stamped out, to provide a clean and accurate cut, and the plates 8 are preferably coated on both sides with brazing metal. Each opening 12 may be provided with a projection which engages in the groove at the base of the seam 1. In an alternative embodiment the plates 8 are stamped to form recesses with sloping sides 14 and the bottoms of the recesses are then punched to form the openings 12. The sloping sides guide the tube ends into the openings and the greater depth of the openings, due to being effectively cut obliquely to the thickness of the metal, gives a larger contact area for brazing.
