Abstract
1,138,460. 13#-(C 2-5 alkyl)-gonane compounds. MERCK & CO. Inc. 25 May, 1966 [1 June, 1965], No. 23387/66. Heading C2U. [Also in Division A5] Novel steroids of the formulµ (wherein R 1 is ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, n-pentyl, or isopentyl; and R 2 is C 1-5 alkyl) are prepared by ethynylating a 3-alkoxy- 13# - alkyl - gona - 1,3,5(10) - trien - 17 - one to give the corresponding 17α-ethynyl-17#-ol, converting this to the 17-acetate, brominating this with N-bromoacetamide to give the 17α-dibromocacetyl-17#-acetoxy compound, debrominating this with zinc dust and an aliphatic acid to give the 17α-acetyl-17#-acetoxy compound, reducing this with lithium or sodium in liquid ammonia to give compound VI, treating this with methanolic HCl to give compound VII, and oxidizing this to compound VIII. 3 - Alkoxy - 13# - alkyl - gona - 1,3,5(10) - trien- 17-ones are prepared by catalytically hydrogenating 3 - alkoxy - 13# - alkyl - gona - 1,3,5(10),8,14 - pentaen - 17 - ones to give 3 - alkoxy - 13# - alkyl - gona - 1,3,5(10),8 - tetraen- 17-ones, treating these with methanolic HCl to give 3 - alkoxy - 13# - alkyl - gona - 1,3,5(10), 9(11) - tetraen-17-ones and catalytically hydrogenating these. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,084,164.
