Abstract

1,137,484. Vapour engine power plant; elastic-fluid turbines. POWER-GAS CORP. Ltd. Dec.29, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 52762/64. Headings F1Q and F1T. [Also in Division C5] In a system for the recovery of waste heat in the form of mechanical energy from a process fluid, e.g. the gas produced by the steam reforming of naphtha under pressure, the process fluid is passed through a conduit 1 into a boiler 2 to heat and vaporize a refrigerant liquid, e.g. propane or butane, supplied to the boiler by a pump 22. The resulting vapour is delivered through a conduit 9 to drive an engine or a turbine 10, whereafter some of the vapour passes to a condenser 18 and some is delivered from the final or an intermediate stage of the turbine, through a conduit 27 to the process. A storage vessel 24 supplies the necessary make-up refrigerant liquid to the boiler. The system may comprise two boilers connected in series with respect to the process fluid-flow, Fig. 4 (not shown), the vaporized refrigerant from the first boiler passing through a closed circuit containing in flow sequence a process-fluid-heated superheater, a turbine, a condenser and a pump, and the vaporized refrigerant from the second boiler passing through a turbine to the process. The two refrigerant flows may contain the same or a different refrigerant. The turbine or turbines may drive process equipment such as pumps and compressors either directly or through an electric generator.
