A pulp-refining apparatus comprises a housing 12, a refining plate or plates 20, 22 rigidly fixed to a rotor 18 in the housing; a non- rotating refining plate or plates 24, 26, cooperate with the rotor refining plate, and are mounted in the housing 12 in fluid tight relation thereto, concentrically with the rotor 18. The non-rotating plates are permitted limited axial movement towards and away from the rotor by means of U-shaped diaphragms 32, 34 which are atached to inboard and outboard carrier plates 28, 30, to which the plates 24, 26 are also attached. The plates can thus align themselves concentrically with and parallel to the refining plates on the rotor. Pressure fluid is supplied via fittings 50, 52 between the interior of the housing and the non-rotating plates to urge them axially towards the rotor. the carrier plates 28, 30 being normally biassed to provide maximum clearance between the refining plates by sets of spring devices 48. The rotor is removably-clamped on a hub 54 by rings 60, 62 and bolt 64, the hub 54 being keyed on a main shaft 10. The stock inlet 68 is connected with conduits 70, 72 leading to opposite sides of the rotor 18, and the conduit 72 may be slid out of a telescopic sealing assembly without removal of bolts. There is a similar stock outlet (not shown). Alternatively the refiner may have conical, partially conically, or partially-spherical refining surfaces or combinations of both.
