Abstract

1,137,095. Glass melting furnace walls. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 14 July, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 16928/66. Heading F4B. . A glass melting furnace has the tank block<SP>s</SP> or the inner surface thereof formed of a mixtur<SP>e</SP> of ZrO 2 and CeO 2 (10%-30% by weight), at least one electrode disposed in contact with the melt and an external connection between the blocks and the electrode(s), whereby a galvanic current passes through the melt, positive ions reacting with the electrode to produce a substance soluble in or compatible with the melt and negative ions are liberated at the inner surfaces of the blocks. The electrode(s) comprise Mo or W metal, or sintered SnO 2 plus an additive. The electrode and block materials may be exchanged and they may be connected to an external current source. Each electrode may be a replaceable block included in the tank wall and both blocks and electrodes may be formed by isostatically pressing and sintering ZrO 2 /CeO 2 powders with an addition of 1 % Sb 2 O 3 or SnO 2 . Parts of the surfaces of the blocks may be coated with metal to provide suitable electric contact surfaces.
