Abstract

1,137,073. Solid fuel. MOBIL OIL CORP. 11 May, 1966 [17 Nov., 1965], No. 20906/66. Addition to 1,090,704. Heading C5G. A smokeless and flameless fuel comprises a major proportion of a primary fuel which has an ignition temperature above 2000‹ F. and a volatile content not exceeding 12% (petroleum coke and anthracite are mentioned), a solid oxidizing agent (NaNO 3 is specified) and a secondary fuel having an ignition temperature below that of the primary fuel (charcoal and/or sawdust are preferred, cotton hulls also being mentioned). The combination of petroleum coke with charcoal and/or sawdust is not employed. Percentage ranges are given, and unspecified nitrates, chlorates, perchlorates, peroxides, permanganates, chromates and dichromates are referred to as oxidizing agent. Conventional binders (preferably starch) and water-proofing agents (preferably wax emulsions) may be included, and an igniting composition comprising all the components except the primary fuel may be applied to the surface of the smokeless fuel, e.g. by spraying or extrusion. Methods of making the final fuel are described, comprising broadly mixing the components with water, briquetting, e.g. by extrusion or by forming in a mould, and drying.
