Abstract

1,136,251. Shielded containers for radioactive material. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 7 Jan., 1966 [11 Jan., 1965], No. 1224/65. Heading B4Q. [Also in Division G6] A reactor having a charge/discharge tube 60 extending though the pressure vessel to remote charging equipment within the vessel as disclosed in Specification 1,089,341, the tube including a valve 59 surrounded by shielding 58, is fuelled by connecting to the lower end of the tube a transportable flask 10 through an intermediate device 50. The flask 10 comprises a pressure vessel having cooling fins 11 and a lid 13 and encloses a magazine 15 having fuel storage tubes 16 arranged on three concentric circles. Each circle also has a larger tube (Fig. 3, not shown), for receiving a plug 32 normally closing an aperture 31 in the lid 13 giving access to that circle. The device 50, which is fitted to the lid after removal of a guard strap 35, comprises a plate 55 and a shielding member 51, the plate 55 carrying three sealing sleeves 53 engaging at their lower ends recesses 54 formed around the upper ends of the apertures 31. A sealing snout 57 connecting the selected sleeve 53 with the tube 60 is surrounded by a shielding member 70. The plate 55 also carries bevel gearing 76, 77, the gear 77 having a square-section spigot 84 making a driving connection with a hole 39 in the upper bearing trunnion 19 of, the magazine 15 whereby the magazine may be driven by a motor unit 80 (Fig. 5, not shown), fixed on the shielding member 51. In operation, after the whole assembly has been lifted towards the tube 60 to make a sealing connection by means of the snout 57, the gas pressure in the flask is made equal to that in the reactor and the plug 32 of the selected aperture 31 is removed by lowering a grab (not shown) down the tube 60 and placing the plug in the appropriate magazine tube. The fuel may now be transferred between storage tubes in the reactor pressure vessel and the flask by means of the grab and rotating the magazine 15 so that successive tubes 16 are aligned with the aperture 31. In a modified flask (Fig. 6, not shown), the magazine tubes receive storage bottles for irradiated fuel elements and a bottle capping head and periscope viewing device are provided.
