Abstract

1,136,069. Mono - olefin copolymers. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 13 Sept., 1967 [14 Sept., 1966; 15 Sept., 1966], No. 41831/67. Addition to 1,027,758. Heading C3P. Olefins are polymerized with a catalyst comprising (a) at least one compound of a metal from Groups IV A and V A of the Periodic Table, (b) at least one compound of a metal from Groups VI and VIII of the Periodic Table, and (c) at least one metal of Groups I A , II, III B and IV B of the Periodic Table or a reducing compound of such metals, the olefins polymerized consisting of a mixture of at least one monoolefin selected from 4-methyl-2-pentene and 4,4-dimethyl-2-pentene with at least one monoolefin compounds of the formula R 3 -CH = CH 2 where R 3 is an alkyl radical containing at least one carbon atom. The Periodic Table is on p. 448 of the 41st edition of " Handbook of Chemistry and Physics." The process may be carried out in two stages, stage (i) involving the use of catalyst components (a) and (c) and stage (ii) involving (a), (b) and (c). Exemplified catalysts are (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, TiCl 3 and nickel bis- (acetylacetonate), and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, TiCl 3 and NiCl 2 .2P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 . Exemplified mixtures are 4 - methyl - 1 - pentene, 2 - methyl - 1 - pentene and cis and trans 4-methyl-2-pentene, 4,4- dimethyl pentenes containing 0À9% of 4,4- dimethyl - 1 - pentene and 99À1% of 4,4- dimethyl - 2 - pentene, and a mixture of butenes and 4-methylpentenes. The two stage process produces polymers having a wide molecular weight distribution.
