Abstract

1,135,851. Rolling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 22 March, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 12620/66. Heading B3M. An edge rolling mill for slabs S is positioned between a pair of horizontal roll stands A, B and comprises three pairs of vertical axes rolls 41, 42, 43 arranged to roll the edges of a hot slab fed through the mill, the rolls of each pair being spaced successively closer together. The first pair and the control pair of rolls 41, 42 are mounted between chocks 35-38 on a pair of housings 14, 14a, slidable transversally to the slab feed direction by hydraulic piston cylinder assemblies 21, 21a to vary the spacing of the rolls. The central pair of rolls 42 are spaced closer together than the rolls 41 by blocks 44 between the chocks 36, 38 and the housings. The finishing rolls 43 are mounted between chocks 39, 40 on housings 15, 15a slidable by hydraulic piston cylinder assemblies 22, 22a and have a larger radius than the rolls 41, 42 forming a narrower pass. The rolls 41-43 are tapered inwardly towards their base and have a flange 45 against which the slab S is moved as a result of the taper. The adjacent housings 14, 15 and 14a, 15a are rigidly connected together by tension bars 28. The rolls 41 and the finishing rolls 43 are driven by motors 51, 56 respectively whereas the central rolls 42 are idlers. Nozzles 61 spray the rolls with water to cool them and wipers 62 prevent the spray hitting the hot slab. The slabs are restricted against vertical movement during their passage through the mill by guides (67), (84), Fig. 1 (not shown), which extend above and below the passes between the rolls 41-43. The lower guides (67) are mounted on pedestals (66) fixed to the mill frame 10 whereas the upper guides (84) are adjustably fixed on a cross-member (71) extending between a pair of parallel beams (68), (69) connecting the roll stands A, B. The mill is readily dismantled by means of four hydraulic cylinders 24, one cylinder being connected to each of the slidable housings 14, 14a, 15, 15a. The chocks 35-40 can be detached from the frame and the rolls 41-43 from the drive motor and the chocks and rolls removed by a crane hook (86), Fig. 8 (not shown).
